Japan has accused Russia of “illegally occupying” four islands. According to CNN , Japan has been making such allegations for almost 20 years amid deteriorating relations with Russia over Ukraine.
On February 24, Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine. Then Japan’s relations with Russia, like those of the Western world, began to deteriorate.
Russia calls the islands of Japan Kuril. It is also known as the Northern Territory Dispute in Japan
Japan’s state-run media, NHK, reported that Japan had not claimed the islands had been occupied since 2003. But now Japan says the islands are theirs and their sovereignty in them is recognized.
The disputed territories along the Japanese island of Hokkaido were annexed by Russia in 1945 when Japan surrendered to Allied forces in World War II. For almost two decades, Russia and Japan have not been able to reach an agreement on these islands.
